Give Me this Mountain
May 7, 2015

~~“Forty-five years after the twelve men returned from their exploration of the land of promise, when the new generation of Israel, under the leadership of Joshua, was completing its conquest of Canaan, Caleb spoke to Joshua: “Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me … to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart. “Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God………And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.” “As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me [at least in the spirit of the gospel and its call and needs]: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, … both to go out, and to come in. Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.” (Josh. 14:7-12).

~~When I read Caleb’s speech and request to Moses, I was moved by such boldness from an 85 year old man. Caleb concluded his moving declaration with a request and a challenge. The Anakims, the giants, were still inhabiting the Promised Land, and they had to be overcome. Now, at 85 years, Caleb says, “Give me this mountain” (Josh. 14:12). At age 85, Caleb went to Joshua to ask for his own portion of the inheritance that Moses had given the Israelites. He reminded Joshua of the assignment he, Joshua and ten other leaders were given by Moses 45years prior to spy the land of Canaan. He said that only the two of them brought back a good report of the land and because of this, he was promised a portion of the land. He reminded him of the Moses' promise to him, "Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's forever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God." Even though 45years had gone by, he was still ready to claim his inheritance. He was not going to die without his promise. He had to think about not only himself, but generations after him. He had to possess this mountain and he wasn’t going to give up until got it!

~~He said he remembered there were giants in the land. He remembered the cities were great and fenced. In spite of all the obstacles in the land then and now, he was still willing to possess his possession. He was saying, "I am tired of the wandering in the wilderness. I am tired of the circling around mountains. It is time to possess." He was saying, "Even though I am 85years old and you may consider me old and useless, I am still as strong now as I was 45years ago. I still have some life left in me. I still have some vision left in me. I still have some grounds to cover and some mountains to conquer and goliaths to defeat and  I will not stop or give up until I do all God wants me to do. God has not given up on me and I will not give up on myself. He still has more in store for me. He spoke a word 45years ago and He will not take me away until I see the manifestation of the word He has spoken. Whatever the reason you may have for not wanting me to have what is rightfully mine is null and void, I am ready to claim my mountain! I know if the Lord is with me, I can do it. I did the right thing and I am expecting my reward from the Lord. I set myself apart from the "nay sayers"; I refused to allow them to lure me into their negative thinking. I refused to think or act like them. It was a great price I had to pay for being different, but I stood my ground and I am here to take what rightfully belongs to me. I refused to join them in their evil ways. They made fun of me. They criticized me. They ostracized me. They would not have anything to do with me because I did not follow them. I have earned the right to this land and I am here to possess it. I am here to collect. More so, I am well able to drive out the Anakims and the illegal occupants in my land!"

Can you boldly speak like Caleb? Can you say that even though there are oppositions, you will go ahead to possess what rightfully belongs to you? Can you stand out and say, even though others are doing the wrong thing, I will wholly follow the Lord? Can you stand and continue to stand on the word that the Lord has spoken over your life even though the enemy is coming against from different directions? Can you focus on God instead on your limitations? Can you focus on the bigness of your God instead of the “bigness” of your adversary? Can you……..?

~~Caleb did not take the easy way out. He could have said, “Well I am old and there is nothing I can do with the land anyway.” He did not only think about himself, he thought about generations unborn. He was prepared to fight for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren’s inheritance. He knew their destinies depended on him and he had to do all in his power to possess their possessions for them too. Caleb did not ask for something easy, he asked for the mountain. A mountain represents a big challenge. He was going to take his mountain by force. Caleb possessed his land and in Verse 15, the scripture says,”… and the land had rest from war.” Isn’t that just amazing? He took the mountain God promised him by force and after that, he had rest from war.

Do you have a mountain before you that you must possess? Are you feeling inadequate and fearful you cannot do it? Are you so fearful you are looking for “Plan B” or other easy ways out? Learn from Caleb. Each time you look for an easy way out you become a target of failure. You must face battles and challenges when God allows them. They are for your own good. The Goliath you confront is the secret to your rest, divine recovery and inheritance. Caleb’s mountain looked huge, but the Lord gave it to him. I do not know what your mountain is today; the Lord will give it to you. Do not allow people to give you reasons: "You are too old, it is too hard, others have failed, it is impossible, you are not good enough, it is too late, no one in your family has done it, you do not deserve it….." You can amend your ways today, get back on track, go back to the Lord and ask Him to help you to do the right thing and follow Him wholly. You can ask for a fresh start and a new beginning. Your inheritance will not be given to another. You are the best there is. God created you in His image. Your God is not a loser so you are not a loser. You can possess your mountain. Nothing and no one can stop you The Lord will renew your strength.

Caleb is not only remembered as one of those that spied the land, he was remembered as the one who wholly followed the Lord, and the only single person that possessed the land. What an honor! What a blessing! You too can be remembered for following the Lord. You too can be remembered for being different. You can be remembered for not following the band wagon. You can be remembered for believing and obeying God. No matter what you re facing, it does not matter the temptations before you or the “Anakims” or enemies confronting you, your destiny your home, your children, your mind, marriage or body, God can give you your “mountain” and give you rest from your troubles. He will give you rest from the “Goliaths” that have troubled your life. You will possess your mountain in Jesus’ name. AMEN!

~~Think about the goodness of the Lord in your life and family. Think about His mercy and His love for you. Who can understand His mercy? Know that you do not deserve it, but the Lord does it anyway. Daily He forgives us. Daily He has mercy on us. When we forget Him, He never forgets us. When we walk away, He comes looking for us. Psalm 8:4 says, "What is man, that Thou art mindful of him and the son of man, that Thou visitest him?" When we fail, He remains faithful. Thank Him for the blood He shed on the cross of Calvary. Who but God can save? His word says, come unto me all ye labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Thank Him for rest in the midst of storm. He loves us even when we are unlovable. When we forget Him, He whispered His love into our ears. He whispered, "Daughter, I am still here." I want you to continue to think about who the Lord is and how good He is and how you cannot do or be anything outside of Him....................
