A man travelling to a far country entrusted his “goods” to three of his servants. He gave one five talents, to another two talents and to the third, he gave one talent. The scripture made us to understand that master was not partial; he only gave each man according to his ability. He did not give them more than they could handle. The servant with the five talents traded with his talent and gained five more. The servant that was given two talents also traded with his talent and gained two additional talents. The one that was given one talent dug the earth and buried his talent in it. So after a long time, the lord returned and it was time to give account of their stewardship. The ones that had the five and two talents presented the lord with the ten and two additional talents they gained in his absence. I am sure the lord was grateful and happy as he pronounced the blessings, “well done, thou good and faithful servant….” upon these two faithful stewards!
This was not the case for the one servant who thought evil of his lord! The lord gave him what he knew he could handle; but he still failed and came up with excuses for not doing what he was supposed to do. He said, “Lord I know thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where you have not sown…..” The lord was wroth and took his talent and gave it to the servant with the ten talents. Just imagine how he felt when he discovered that if he had done the right thing he would have been doing himself a favor. I am sure he was shocked when he discovered that the other two servants were able to keep the proceeds of their labor and more shocked when his only talent was taken from him and given to another! He must have been angry, disappointed, dejected, felt rejected……What a shame! If only he knew that it was ONLY a test. If only he knew that he was going to get to keep the talent and the proceeds. If only He knew his labor over the talent was not going to be in vain. If only he knew…..Unfortunately, he failed the test! There is no way the lord would have committed more into his hands if he failed at the first level! God cannot commit greater things into our hands if we are not faithful in the least. (Luke 16:10)
Do you know that a lot of us are living like the servant who was given the one talent? God was only able to use the rod Moses had in his hand to perform miracles (Exodus 4:2). What do you have in your hand? This year, God wants to take us higher, deeper and to greater heights and the only way He will do that is to make sure that the gifts He has bestowed upon us do not go to waste. God does not waste resources. Someone said, “undeveloped talents go away; stagnant water is polluted; unwound clocks stop; and unused doors close permanently! If you do not use it, you can lose it. The servant who buried his talent lost it. You will not lose your blessings in Jesus’ name. The blessing of the Lord makes rich and he adds no sorrow with it (Proverb 10:22).
Start with what you have, what you know and where you are. Then there will be progressive revelation of who you are and what you need to do to get to where God wants you to be. It took Jesus three (3) years to shake the world and He is still shaking the world over 2,000 years after His resurrection! It took Him 30 years to prepare for His 3½ year assignment. Remember, every day, you are writing something on the pages of the chapters of your life’s book. You cannot afford to leave the pages of your book blank. You will give account of it! You cannot afford to write negative things in it either. You cannot allow just anything on the pages of your book. You are here for a while, not forever. What you don’t use, you will lose to a more willing vessel. If you are willing and obedient you shall eat the fruit of the land (Isaiah 1:19).
You will not lose your talents, gifts and opportunities in Jesus’ name. The doors God has opened or will open will not shut against you. Your “clock” will not stop abruptly. Your fire will not be extinguished by life, circumstances, people, slothfulness, procrastination, disobedience, fear, mistakesor the devil. You will not be demoted. You will go to greater heights. God will strengthen and uphold you. You will not fail Him. You will not fail your children. You will not fail yourself. You will not fail your generation. Your gifts will make a way for you and put you before kings. It is well with you in Jesus’ name. AMEN
